WHAT. With the 2019-2020 pandemic, the economical crisis in Brasil has worsened, and more and more people are struggling to afford their own houses. From that, new ways of living that are more accessible need to exist. Coliving is one of them, allying affordable housing, social integration, and a more sustainable way of living.

WHERE. Located in the old industrial district of Porto Alegre-Brazil, the project lot is a recurring example in the region, an old warehouse with an unactive façade and without front gardens. This typology results in an unsafe corner, and also arid. The streets in which the project is situated (Álvaro Chaves and Santos Dumont St.) are medium flow. In the surroundings are small and commercial buildings. 

CONCEPT. HIATUS is a space of time between two moments; interruption; space in between two elements; It serves also as a metaphor for temporary living. A place of convivence that does not propose to be definite, but a provisional moment of life.

HOW. Aiming a fast construction in loco, all the elements needed were transported in trucks of 12x3,20x3,5m and they would arrive in the lot following logical phases of assemblage. All the processes would last approximately 20 days.

Photovoltaics panels. system on grid with 198 units (21 hybrids for heating water), energy provided is led to the 1st floor where are the 21 inverters (1 per house unit) which will then distribute the energy to the buildings.

Water supply. cold water (AF) is provided by the city system and is pumped from the 1st floor to the roof floor. AF: 2 reservoirs of 3000L; AQ: 1 reservoir of 3000L. Water is heated by the hybrid photovoltaics panels.

Rainwater. the water is collected in the green roof and then can be reutilized to water plants in the communal garden and to wash clothes in the laundry.

Gray water. from sinks and showers of the units, il will fo to the reservoirs and the to filter systems.

Gray water treated. after passing through the filter systems, it is pumped to the toilets of the units as a reuse form.

Unit type 01. With 39m², It was thought to be individual, for 1 person or 2 in the maximum, sharing a bedroom. It has a complete bathroom, kitchen, and living room integrated and a bedroom that can occasionally be integrated into the social area.

Unit type 02. With 59m², It was thought of as a coliving unit, where the social areas could be shared while the bedrooms can be individual or shared if necessary.

Unit type 03. With 59m², located on the 1st floor, It was thought for people with physical disabilities.
